Joel Daniel Whiteside, 49, of North Little Rock, Ark., died Wednesday, May 16, 2007, at his home from complications of diabetes. A native of Tyler, he was raised in Nacogdoches, graduating from Nacogdoches High School and Stephen F. Austin State University with a degree in geography and geology.

He had worked as an engineering technician for the State Health Department of Arkansas for 20 years until the day before his death.

Visitation will be at Lloyd James Funeral Home, Tyler, on Sunday, May 20, from 4 to 6 p.m. with informal eulogies from friends and family. Burial will be Monday morning at Tyler Memorial Park. No formal services are planned for either location.
 
Survivors include his mother, Jo Beth Brown Maraist and stepfather A.J. Maraist Jr. of Beaumont; sister, Roxanne Wheeler and nephews Charles and Jared Wheeler of Nacogdoches; stepbrother, Bruce Mace of Little Rock, Ark.; and aunt Paula Odin of McLean, Va. Joel was preceded in death by his father, Charles Daniel Whiteside.
